Do You Need A Skin Care Fridge?

Updated: Feb 12, 2021

They look cute and take your beauty counter to the next level, but are they worth the hype? Luckily, I was able to purchase my own fridge on sale at Wal-Mart for $29. If you are searching the market for a skincare fridge, keep reading for my experience with my fridge, what these fridges claim to do for your skin care and if you really need one! WHAT IS A SKIN CARE FRIDGE FOR? These mini fridges provide a convenient way to store your skin care, claim to extend your products shelf life and reduce the risk of your products developing harmful bacteria. They also enhance the at-home-spa feeling. Refrigerating your skin care can also help calm and de-puff your skin giving it a soothing feeling. These beauty fridges are made specifically for skin care products so they are cool enough to not damage your products (a regular fridge isn’t the ideal temperature and can damage products making them ineffective). DO YOU REALLY NEED TO KEEP YOUR SKIN CARE COLD? The truth is, whenever a product is released into the market it has to go through stability testing to make sure that it won’t decompose at room temperature, and that it’s not going to lose its efficiency in all kinds of conditions. The majority of skin care products are created to be stored at room temperature without any issues. Unless the manufacturer kept the product in a refrigerator, if it was sold at the retailer in a refrigerator or if it’s a prescribed medicated cream that needs to go in the fridge, there’s no real reason to do it. BUT THERE ARE A FEW BENEFITS OF REFRIGERATING CERTAIN PRODUCTS…

Although most face products are ok to be stored at room temperate, storing certain products at a cooler temperatures may:

  • extend shelf life a little by affecting the stability of its active ingredients

  • decrease potential bacterial contamination

  • boost circulation

  • calm, de-puff, and soothe your skin

  • enhance the experience of the product

WHAT TO CHILL:

Rule of thumb is, if it says to refrigerate it on the label, do it. But, if you want the bonus benefits listed above, you can cool certain products like vitamin c (since it’s an active ingredient), products with aloe (for a cooling sensation), water-based products like creams, toners face mists (to feel refreshing), sheet masks and jade rollers (for a soothing effect). For natural and preservative-free products, cooling can also be beneficial in providing the perks above.

WHAT NOT TO CHILL:

Products that include silicone, oil, wax or clay can can change the texture, consistency and formula of the product. It can even cause certain products to become ineffective. MY EXPERIENCE WITH A SKIN CARE FRIDGE:

I love the look of having an organized fridge just for skin care on my beauty counter. Apart from its sleek aesthetic, here are my honest thoughts... Now, I don’t have any products that need to be refrigerated, but I did store my sheet masks, eye masks and cream, facial sprays, toners and moisturizer in my fridge. I did like the enhanced cooling, soothing and de-puffing effects it provided my skin, especially when my skin was irritated or dry. It felt great to apply a cold under eye mask.

Did it see any dramatic effects in my routine?

It definitely boosted the results of any eye products that I use to minimize dark circles or puffiness. The cooling of my face products helped to soothe my skin and made it feel like I was at the spa. The fridge is definitely nice to have, but I don’t think it’s necessary for a good skin care routine.

Skincare fridges are modern luxuries that are not necessary, but like most luxury items- Great to have!
